The coordinates set where exactly the hole will be on the part. Each hole is positioned by two numbers — «X (part)» and «Y (part)» — measured from the chosen origin (a corner of the part). Together with the depth and the side they fully describe where the drill will go.
The coordinate origin
At the top of the drilling form you choose the coordinate origin — one of the four corner icons of the part:
- the lower left corner;
- the upper left corner;
- the lower right corner;
- the upper right corner.
X and Y are measured from the chosen corner. By default it is the lower left corner. It is convenient to set the origin so that the coordinates match the dimensions on the drawing — for example, to tie the hole to the edge from which it is easiest to measure. For paired (mirror) parts, the choice of corner helps to mirror the drilling neatly afterwards.
X and Y of the part
The «X (part)» and «Y (part)» fields set the hole position:
- X — along the length of the part (the X axis) from the chosen corner;
- Y — along the width of the part (the Y axis) from the chosen corner.
The value is entered as a number in millimetres; the resulting coordinate is shown right next to the field. A comma and a dot are equivalent as the decimal separator.
Coordinates by formula
Instead of a number, X or Y can take a formula — handy for parametric parts where the hole should «travel» together with the size. The formula icon next to the field opens the list of available variables:
x1,y1— the overall size of the part along the X and Y axes;x,y— the saw size of the part along the X and Y axes;x2,y2— the size after pre-jointing without the edge along the X and Y axes;z— the part thickness (the Z axis);big_side,small_side— the overall size of the larger and the smaller side of the part;detail.t_band_pre_joint,detail.t_band_thikness— the pre-jointing thickness and the edge thickness on the top side of the part;production.frez_diametr— the default cutter diameter.
For example, x1/2 places the hole in the centre of the length, x1-50 — 50 mm from the far edge, y1/2 — in the centre of the width. When the part dimensions change, the coordinate recalculates itself.
Drilling into an edge: centred on the thickness
When the hole is bored not into the face but into an edge, one of the coordinates is responsible for the position across the part thickness — and iFurn.pro automatically sets it to the centre, at half the thickness:
- when drilling into the left or right edge, the X coordinate is centred automatically (equal to half the thickness), and the position along the edge is set by Y;
- when drilling into the top or bottom edge — the other way round: Y is centred on the thickness, and X sets the position along the edge.
This removes the manual calculation of the edge centre: it is enough to set the hole position along the edge, and to correct the centre by hand if needed. On the face and back surfaces both coordinates are free — there the hole is positioned on the plane.
Next
Once the origin and the coordinates are set, the hole still needs a depth, a side and a diameter (see the corresponding articles of the section). And to place a row of identical holes from the given coordinate, use «X offset / Y offset» and «Number of drillings» — covered in the article «Row of holes: offset and number of drillings».
