A groove has two types — open and closed. They differ in their ends: an open groove runs from edge to edge of the part, a closed one ends within its body, not reaching the edges. The type is chosen in the «Groove type (open/closed)» field.

The «Groove type» field

The drop-down has two values — «open» and «closed». By default the type that the company has set as the main one in the production settings is substituted. When the type is switched, the dependent fields of the form are reset so that no values from the other type remain.

Open groove

An open groove runs all the way through — from one edge of the part to the other and out to the ends. It needs no extra end offsets: the edges of the part themselves serve as the start and the end. This is the most common case — a groove for the back panel of a wardrobe or a drawer bottom that runs along the whole length of the side.

Only an open groove on the face can be saved as a template (the «Create template» button below the form) — see the article «Creating a template from the groove form».

Closed groove

A closed groove starts and ends inside the part, without reaching the edges. It is used when the groove must not be visible from the end — for example, on a visible part. For a closed groove two extra fields appear in the form:

  • «Offset from the edge at the start of the groove» — at what distance from the part edge the groove begins;
  • «Offset from the edge at the end of the groove» — at what distance from the opposite edge the groove ends.

Under each field iFurn.pro shows the allowed range — the minimum and maximum, computed from the part dimensions and the groove side. If you enter a value outside the range, the field is highlighted red and such a groove will not be saved — this is a safeguard against a groove that does not fit on the part. Both offsets can be entered as a number or a formula.

Regardless of the type, the groove needs a side, a depth and a position — see the article «Side, depth and position of the groove». The groove width is covered in the article «Groove width and saw thickness».
