The depth sets how deep the recess is milled into the part. It determines whether the recess keeps a bottom or goes all the way through.
Depth field
The depth is set in the «Recess depth» field — as a number or a formula, with the computed value in millimetres shown nearby. The minimum value is 1; below it the field highlights the error «Minimum value 1», and the recess cannot be added.
Blind and through recess
- Blind — the depth is less than or equal to the part's thickness. The recess keeps a bottom (a cavity, not a hole).
- Through — the depth is greater than the part's thickness. The recess goes all the way through and gets an inner edge. In this case the form opens the block for processing the edge inside the recess (see the article «Edge and edge processing inside a through recess»). If you then reduce the depth to a blind one, the inner-edge settings are reset — they are needed only for a through recess.
Glass
For glass the depth is not editable: it is automatically set equal to the glass thickness plus 1 mm, that is, a recess in glass is always a through one. The depth field is locked in this case.
For the shape and sizes of a recess, see the article «Recess: shape, sizes and type».
Back-side recess for a glued-on sink
For a through face-side cut-out on a 12 mm compact board, the option "Remove material from the back side for sink gluing" is available. Around the opening, on the back side, the cutter mills a "shelf" onto which the rim of the glued-on sink rests and is bonded.
- Conditions: a through cut-out from the face side, part thickness 12 mm, the smaller side of the opening from 300 mm.
- Shelf width — from 1 mm; the shelf cannot come closer than 5 mm to the part edge.
- Shelf depth — up to half the part thickness.
The recess is shown both on the drawing and in the 3D view of the part.
