The same part can be described by different numbers — depending on the production stage at which the dimension is measured: before trimming, after trimming, or with the edge band already glued on. In newgo these are three dimension entry modes; the mode is chosen once for the whole order, and all parts are recalculated automatically.
The three modes
- Before trimming, without edge
- The size of the blank as it comes off the saw: there is no edge band yet, but the trimming allowance is already included in the number — that material will be removed by the cutter. This is the size the sawyer works with (in printed forms — the "saw size").
- After trimming, without edge
- The same blank once the trimming allowance has been removed, but before the edge band is glued on. This is the prepared blank the band will be applied to.
- Part with edge
- The finished part — with the edge band already glued on. This is the size the customer measures at the installation site.
How the modes relate
All three numbers describe the same part at different stages, so conversion between them is unambiguous:
- "before trimming" → "after trimming": the trimming allowance is subtracted;
- "after trimming" → "part with edge": the edge band thickness is added.
It is calculated per side (Top, Bottom, Left, Right) and per axis: however many sides are banded and whatever the band thickness is there, that is what gets added. Whichever of the three numbers the operator enters, the system works out the other two itself.
The difference only appears where there is an edge band
Both the band thickness and the trimming allowance are taken into account only on the sides where an edge band is actually assigned. The trimming allowance is narrower still: only if the side has a band and trimming is enabled for it.
Hence a consequence that often surprises people: on a part with no edge banding at all, all three modes show the same numbers. The modes are not about whether the edge will be banded or milled; they are only about the stage at which the dimension of a part that does have banding is measured. More about the allowance itself — in the article "Part trimming".
Where it is switched
The mode is a shared order setting in the project header, not a property of an individual part. Changing the mode recalculates every part in the order at once; different parts of the same order cannot be given different modes.
The mode also affects the display: the numbers in the parts list change, with "before trimming" sizes shown in italics and "after trimming" ones in bold, so it is visible which mode is in use.
